Route Challenges & Tips

1. Matakana Road / Te Honohono ki Tai Road Roundabout (Steps 8-9)

Challenge: You'll keep left onto Matakana Road before taking the 1st exit at the roundabout onto Te Honohono ki Tai Road... a transition from the town centre to more rural roads.

Tip: The "keep left" instruction means you're not turning – follow the road as it naturally curves. At the roundabout, signal left for the 1st exit and be prepared for the road style to change as you leave.

2. Great North Road / Elizabeth Street / Twin Coast Discovery Highway (Steps 10-13)

Challenge: Multiple turns in quick succession – left onto Great North Road, then quickly left again onto Sandspit Road before turning right onto Elizabeth Street (Twin Coast Discovery Highway).

Tip: Don't rush between turns; it's okay to take your time. Follow the road signs for "Town Centre" and "Matakana/Leigh" to help orient yourself.

3. Alnwick Street Section (Steps 16-17 and 22-23)

Challenge: The street layout in this older part of Warkworth can be confusing with narrow streets and angled intersections.

Tip: If Alnwick Street is closed, follow any diversion signs and stay calm – the testing officer will guide you. Watch for parked cars reducing the road width, and check for any oncoming traffic before proceeding.
